Men aren't immune to the aging process which is why we offer a wide variety of treatments for our male patients. The most common among these are Botox, commonly referred to as "Brotox" for men, and injectable fillers.

WHAT IS BROTOX?

Brotox is a term used to describe Botox injections for men. Botox is a neuromodulator that temporarily weakens the muscles in the injected area which can aid in anti-aging. It is used to treat permanent furrows and deep wrinkles in the skin that are formed by the continual contraction of facial muscles.

HOW IS BOTOX USED FOR MEN?

Men can benefit from Botox injections in multiple areas of the face to prevent wrinkles, but it can also be used in other areas of the body to prevent hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). Botox for men is most commonly used for the following treatment areas:

  • Frown lines between eyebrows
  • Crow’s feet around eyes
  • Upper nose wrinkles
  • Forehead wrinkles
  • “Smoker’s lines” around the mouth
  • Wrinkling to chin
  • Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating to the palms and underarms

WHAT CAN BOTOX TREAT FOR MEN?

In the U.S. about half a million men have Botox injections every year, and the numbers are rising. Of course, this still trails female usage by around 7 million injection sessions, but who’s counting? More and more men are seeing the benefits of Botox.

Botox works in the same fashion for men and women, although men can require more Botox for certain muscles than women. The mechanism of action is the same. When Botox is injected into a targeted muscle, the botulinum toxin blocks the nerve messages sent to the brain. Because the brain then never receives the message to contract the injected muscle, the muscle remains at rest. Because certain muscles on the upper third of the face create wrinkles on the surface skin when they are contracted to form expressions, this relaxation of the muscle keeps the wrinkle from forming.

For men, these are the most popular injection sites:

  • Crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes
  • Frown lines between the eyebrows
  • Forehead creases
  • Laugh lines around the mouth

WHY ARE MORE MEN CHOOSING TO HAVE BOTOX AND DERMAL FILLER INJECTIONS?

There are a few reasons more and more men are choosing to use injectables to hide some of their lines, creases, and areas of volume loss. One main component is societal changes in what is attractive in men. Formerly, the craggy, weathered face of the American cowboy was a symbol of rugged masculinity. Of course, that face had seen one too many sunny days and was a sea of sun-damaged skin. The Marlboro Man of advertising typified this rugged man.

No one wants to see that anymore. No matter if you’re riding a horse all day or you’re a desk jockey, men don’t want to look older, and wrinkles, creases, and sunken areas make a man look older. Botox and dermal fillers erase those wrinkles and make a man look younger.

There are other factors thought to be contributing to more men opting for injectables:

  • Workplace competitiveness — As men age and feel competition from younger co-workers, the last thing they want to project is older age. Nothing does that like crow’s feet and frown lines on the upper third of the face or smile lines and parentheses lines on the lower face. Injectables erase these signs of aging.
  • Social media — These days we’re all online. Whether it’s social media like Snapchat or Facebook or a dating app, our profiles feature high-resolution images taken with the technologically advanced cameras in our cell phones. They show everything, including every wrinkle and crease. But if a man has Botox injections, they don’t show crow’s feet or frown lines.
  • Encouragement from a partner — With the rapidly vanishing stigma about getting Botox or dermal filler injections, our partners no longer feel it’s off-limits to broach a subject such as getting Botox or Juvéderm injections with their male partner. After all, our partners don’t want to be with someone who’s looking older any more than anyone else does.

Men often cite two areas of contention with their facial aging: looking tired around their eyes and a lack of jawline definition. Botox works on the eye area. Fillers work on the under eyes and around the mouth and jawline. Kybella works to slim your profile.

WHY ARE MEN USING DERMAL FILLERS?

Dermal fillers for men are most commonly used to repair volume loss in the face. There are many different types of fillers available, each of them having great safety and tolerability profiles. We offer Juvederm, Restylane, Belotero, and Radiesse fillers to treat all areas of the face. Learn more dermal fillers here.

DO MEN NEED TO USE MORE BOTOX THAN WOMEN?

Men have greater muscle mass than women. Even within men, larger, stronger men will need more Botox to be effective than small-boned, slender men.

Botox is priced by the unit, so it may cost somewhat more for a man to have the results he seeks than a woman, even though the two have the same areas treated. Under-dosing can allow muscles to still contract, which will leave a man unsatisfied with his results.

For instance, men can require a dose of approximately 40 units or more of Botox. That high a dose is considered to be “off label,” as it is approximately double the dose approved by the FDA, which based its dosage approvals on the common doses needed by women. In this case, a 20-unit dose would be right for an average woman.

CAN SCULPTRA TREAT VOLUME LOSS IN MEN?

Sculptra Aesthetic is a long-lasting injectable collagen stimulator that can be used to correct all areas of the face with volume loss. This injectable is recommended for men with more severe volume loss, and may also be recommended in combination with other injectables at the same time. If your face is looking dull and flattened, Sculptra will restore fullness in these areas. Learn more about Sculptra here.

DOUBLE CHIN REDUCTION WITH KYBELLA

A strong jawline is considered one of the most attractive masculine features. Kybella is an injectable treatment administered under the chin to reduce the appearance of what is known as a double-chin, which in turn can enhance the appearance of the jawline. Learn more about Kybella here.

HOW DO INJECTABLES AFFECT MEN DIFFERENTLY THAN WOMEN?

There are several characteristics of the male face that set it apart from the female face when it comes to injectables. Not only are men’s skulls about 20 percent larger than women, but they have more facial muscle mass, subcutaneous tissue, and blood vessel density.

Men have more prominent jawlines and chins, higher and wider foreheads, and their eyebrows have a flatter contour, as they sit lower along the orbital rim.

This contrasts with a woman’s eyebrows and their more feminine, arched appearance. Additionally, men’s eyes are larger than a woman’s, but they are smaller proportionally to the rest of the head. Male noses tend to be wider and straighter.

Expressions, the domain of Botox, are also different. Male facial expressions are larger after adjusting for the face size, and men tend to develop more severe, deep wrinkles in all facial areas. That’s because men have lower levels of subcutaneous fat compared with women.

As with Botox, men will often need more dermal filler units than women to fill the same creases, say smile lines. This is because men form deeper lines and creases. This is also due to having less subcutaneous fat underneath. Men don’t respond any differently to either Botox or fillers, they just usually will require more product to have the desired effects.

WILL THE RESULTS OF INJECTABLES BE NATURAL-LOOKING FOR A MAN?

Our providers at our six Skin & Beauty Center locations have extensive experience and training with all of the injectables we offer. This includes injecting them for our male patients. As is the norm, California is setting the trend for more men having injectable treatments each year, and our providers fully understand the nuances and differences between the male and female face.

That training and experience are what ensures your results will look completely natural. You won’t look inflated or expressionless. You’ll simply look younger, and isn’t that what we’re all looking for?

WHAT SHOULD MEN KNOW BEFORE CONSIDERING INJECTABLE TREATMENTS?

Botox has been injected millions of times all across the globe, and it has proven to be ultimately safe and effective. Although not as popular as Botox, the same is true for fillers such as Juvéderm, Restylane, Radiesse, and the others we offer at Skin & Beauty Center.

But our male patients do need to understand that they will likely require more of any injectable than women. The reasons for this are detailed above. Because Botox and all dermal fillers are priced by the vial or by the syringe, that means it will cost more for a man to have an injectable treatment than a woman.

Will a Thread Lift Chisel My Jawline?

Yes, a thread lift can help chisel a man’s jawline. The average male patient is often concerned about their skin laxity and marionette lines when they smile. The main cause of a sagging jawline is due to a lack of collagen and reduced skin elasticity. Thread lifts offer men a safe, minimally-invasive method of achieving their desired look. The results from a thread lift can last up to three years.

How Often Do Men Need to Get BOTOX® Cosmetic ?

The way Botoxx® Cosmetic works is that it “freezes” certain muscles using a bacteria known as botulinum. By effectively freezing the muscles, Botoxx® Cosmetic can prevent the formation of wrinkles. However, the effects of Botox do not last very long. Men who receive Botox to maintain a youthful appearance will need to get repeat injections.

This is because the one drawback of Botox® Cosmetic is that the results do not last for too long. Over time, the aging signs will gradually reappear. To prevent this, you will need to get additional injections every three to four months.

Can I Combine Cosmetic Treatments?

Yes, it is possible for men to combine cosmetic treatments, so they can get the appearance they are aiming for. We’ll use Botox ®Cosmetic as an example; you can combine it with a wide array of other cosmetic treatments.

These treatments include the following:

  • Dermal fillers, such as Kybella and Juvederm.
  • Coolsculpting.
  • Chemical peels.
  • Microdermabrasion.
  • Laser treatments.

While Botox® Cosmetic is versatile when it comes to combining, it is always best to consult your plastic surgeon about which will work best for you. Furthermore, you also need to consider the potential risks and contraindications of combining these treatments. Your plastic surgeon will provide you with all of the necessary information before going ahead with the procedures.
