What Is Light Therapy?
Light Therapies are medical devices that utilize red and/or blue LED light technology to treat acne. Blue light neutralizes the bacteria that causes the redness and inflammation of acne. Combined with the anti-inflammatory properties of Red light, it helps minimize the redness of acne lesions.
Red light can also help with skin rejuvenation, as some patients have experienced noticeable smoothing of their fine lines and wrinkles. Light therapy is an effective, safe, and non-medicated precedure that helps treat your acne. These treatments are done in a series of 8 treatments, twice a week, for four weeks. Each treatment lasts around 20 minutes.
What is Photodynamic Therapy?
Photodynamic Therapy is another great way to reduce acne, especially inflammatory and cystic lesions. This has been proven to shrink oil glands, as well as decreasing the amount of bacteria on the skin. Photodynamic therapy is typically done with Levulan (Aminolevulinic acid 20%). This is a naturally occurring photosensitizing compound, which is applied topically to the skin, and then “activated” by light. The process of activating the chemical with light is called Photodynamic Therapy. This procedure will require several hours of your time. There is some downtime associated with it, but after 2-6 treatments, most people notice significant improvement.
The lights stimulate natural processes that continue after the treatment has stopped. Optimum results are seen 4-12 weeks after completion of the treatment course, with a majority of people seeing their best response 8 weeks after the conclusion of treatments. Our staff will be able to tell if you’re a candidate.
