Microdermabrasion is a gentle exfoliation method that is efficient in removing the older, dead skin cells at the top of the epidermis and better than an ordinary manual scrub.

Exfoliation not only removes the dull, dead skin, on the surface, but stimulates the production of new, young, and plump skin cells, increasing cell turnover, which results in a fresher, smoother surface of skin. This is one of the “secrets” for younger looking skin.

How Does Microdermabrasion Work?

At Skin and Beauty Center, our estheticians use a machine with “diamond tips”. The device is gently glided across the skin, providing a light sanding of the topmost layer of skin. This stimulates the body's natural healing process, helping to replace damaged and old skin cells with newer cells as well as promoting collagen production for more youthful, plump skin.

The microdermabrasion device also features an attached tube which vacuums up the dead skin as it goes, leaving your skin clean and prepped for any additional treatments done in combination with microdermabrasion, such as a restorative and hydrating facial.

Who Is Microdermabrasion For?

Microdermabrasion is for anyone dealing with scars, melasma, uneven skin texture, aging, and uneven skin tone. Unlike other treatments that solve these kinds of skin issues, microdermabrasion is nonsurgical. Other microdermabrasion benefits are improved self-esteem and a more youthful, healthier appearance.

Does Microdermabrasion Work for All Skin Types?

The diamond-tip microdermabrasion machine used at Skin and Beauty Center is gentler on skin, leaving a slight, healthy pink glow, but not red, irritated skin. The procedure isn't painful and there's no downtime. You can complete your microdermabrasion treatment during a lunch break and get right back to your daily life.

However, if you have rosacea, or ultra sensitive skin, even this gentle microdermabrasion may be too abrasive. Consult with your dermatologist to determine if microdermabrasion is a good option for you.

Microdermabrasion Methods

Your doctor can utilize one of three types of microdermabrasion. The first is hydradermabrasion, which infuses skin-healthy products and exfoliates. The treatment benefits your blood flow and collagen levels, which should increase.

You can also receive crystal microdermabrasion. This form of microdermabrasion in Northridge uses a handpiece to distribute small crystals over the skin. They exfoliate the outer layer, removing dead skin in the process. The crystals are composed of sodium bicarbonate or aluminum oxide.

The third type of microdermabrasion uses a diamond-tipped handpiece. The handpiece has a rough, exfoliating edge available at different pressures and suctions. If you need microdermabrasion around the eyes or face, ask your doctor to use a diamond-tipped handpiece.

How Much Does Microdermabrasion Cost?

You will usually pay per session when receiving microdermabrasion treatments. The costs start at $75 and can cost between $300 and $1,500 a session on the higher end. The sessions are typically short, not lasting longer than 30 minutes.

How to Prepare for Microdermabrasion Treatments

Do you have a microdermabrasion appointment coming up in Northridge at the Skin & Beauty Center? Here’s how we recommend you prepare ahead of your session.

Minimal Skin Treatments

You can use topical skin products as usual, from sunscreen to your favorite anti-aging cream, but you should not wax your skin before receiving microdermabrasion. You should also not sunbathe.

Pause Smoking

You shouldn’t smoke cigarettes within seven days of a microdermabrasion session. Stopping will help with your blood flow.

Cease Certain Medications

Confirm with your doctor that you should pause glycolic acid and aspiration treatments, including Differin and Retin-A.

What Are the Side Effects of Microdermabrasion?

After receiving a microdermabrasion treatment, you might notice side effects such as bleeding, bruising, surface abrasions, and redness. You could even experience post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and skin tightening.

These side effects are temporary and should clear up in about seven days.

When Will I See Results?

Like many other non-invasive cosmetic treatments, microdermabrasion results are best when done as a series of treatments. To start we recommend a series of 3 or more treatments. One treatment may be too subtle to see the difference, but over time, at regular intervals, you will see texture and discoloration improve. Of course individual results may vary from person to person.
